Bar 44 (Cardiff city centre & Penarth) - A Spanish twist on the traditional roast dinner - They serve a variety of fabulous Sunday Roast Platters. All for sharing with a choice of meats (plus veggie option). Our favourite has to be the 35-day aged Hereford beef. The sides are equally incredible with jamon-fat roast potatoes that will blow your socks-off! One Tripadvisor review raves "the best Sunday lunch I've ever had".

The Potted Pig (Cardiff city centre) - In an old bank vault the ambiance in this place is stunning. Cosy yet stylish it really is perfect for a Sunday afternoon vibe. The Sunday Lunch here is great value and offers either a 2-course or 3-course option. Our team here at Switchback Stays can't agree on which is the tastiest choice (pork belly or beef brisket) but we all agree that the cauliflower cheese is epic.

Humble Onion (Dinas Powys - just outside Cardiff) - You'd be hard-pressed to find a better Sunday lunch than the one served at The Humble Onion. It's truly outstanding. Nestled within a charming coach house this small restaurants focusses on serving up high-quality local produce. There are several fantastic options on the menu for the main course, just make sure you don't miss out on one of the delicious starters!

Staying in - If you are in the mood for a 'staying-in' Sunday afternoon every Switchback Stays apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen so you can prepare your own meals.

Ed Sheeran is back in Cardiff

This week Ed Sheeran is back in Cardiff for the first leg of his new tour. He's performing for 3 successive nights in The Principality and the city is BUZZING! They are expecting a sell-out crowd of 75,000 for Thursday, Friday and Saturday night.

With the window open in the Switchback Stays office this evening we can hear the chatter of people and the infamous Ed Sheeran classic 'Gallway Girl' playing in the local beer garden. It's Ed-fever out there!

Back in 2018 Ed was here for 4 nights in a row and performed to 250,000 people. It's great to have Ed and all the fans back in the city in 2022. This feels a suitably epic start to what will hopefully be a fantastic summer for Cardiff.

Milkwood

The Classroom

This is a working restaurant but primarily a training ground for college catering students. The dishes are creative and stylishly plated. The views from the top floor of the college are fantastic.

There is a trio of excellent Spanish restaurants around West Street. Asasdor 44 for a special occasion with stunning steaks, Bar 44 for delicious tapas & drinks and Curado bar specialising in northern Spanish Pintxos.

Casual Dining….

Dusty Knuckle

This is a fantastic pizza place located in a courtyard just outside the City. well worth a visit for the authentic pizza.

Cardiff Central market

Recently gained a new lease of life with some independent eateries opening alongside some of the more traditional vendors in Cardiff market.

Hard Lines coffee serve excellent coffee in their pop up. The most recent addition Ffwrnes pizza, that is super tasty and great value.

The Early Bird Bakery

This independent cafe & bakery offers a delicious selection of produce all made in house. Don’t miss out on the custard filled donuts….a real treat.

The Arcades

Madame Fromage

More than 150 local and international cheeses are on offer at this deli and restaurant. Eating in here is a real treat, not to missed when in Cardiff.

Why visit the lovely Penarth......

Penarth is a seaside resort in the Cardiff urban area. It is located approximately 4 miles south of Cardiff city centre on the north shore of the Severn Estuary and the southern end of Cardiff Bay.

Penarth is a great day out with a number of things to do, places to visit and fantastic options for food and drink. Here are some of our highlights.......

1. The restored Art Deco Penarth Pier is truly special. It is home to the fantastic Waterloo tea coffee shop, a gallery and a cinema.

*Top tip* Wake up early to see a spectacular sunrise from the promenade.

2. Penarth is just a stone’s throw from Cardiff Bay. Take a water taxi from Penarth Marina or walk, cycle or catch a land-train across the Barrage which forms part of the Wales Coastal Path.

3. Penarth is home to a number of beautiful parks. Walk from the seafront through Alexandra park to a number of independent shops in the tree-lined town centre.

4. Penarth is great for walks along the coast and in the countryside. Cosmeston lakes nature park is a short drive away for fantastic walks and amazing sunsets. The park also boasts a medieval village living history heritage project.

5. Penarth has a beautiful marina. Watch the world sail by while relaxing on the terrace of The Deck bar in the heart of the marina. Remember the factor 30 as this place is a real sun-trap.

6. Penarth is home to several fantastic independent food and drink businesses.

To eat out ...Bar44. If we could eat here every day we would. A family run business, the focus at Bar44 is on impeccably sourced ingredients served simply. Always friendly staff and a great atmosphere this is one not to be missed.

To eat at home ...the posh fish and chip company. The award winning Cardiff based fish and chip shop has recently opened its second store in Penarth town centre. Well worth a visit.

Fauvette... your local fromagerie. We love this place which specialises in artisan cheeses from the British isles and natural wines.

On the go.. .pizza pronto@penarth station kiosk, an artisan pizza takeaway served from a hatch. Always fresh and delicious.

For coffee and cake..... Brod, a Danish bakery and coffee shop. This place never fails, a taste of Denmark in Penarth.

For drinks out..... Gin64, a super stylish family run Gin bar in the town. Drop in and ask for a Penarth Gin, a triple distilled Welsh dry gin which was launched by the bar to celebrate their first birthday.

Our Story So far........

Take a look behind the scenes into the story so far........the founders of Switchback Stays Claire & Bec.

Myself and Bec both found ourselves in Cardiff for different reasons. I came to Cardiff on a Tennis scholarship to University at 18 and Bec came to head up a performance tennis programme in Newport at 22.

During the next 10-15 years we both forged successful tennis coaching businesses with ourselves as the brand. Eventually in 2010 our paths met when we began working together in tennis.

Tennis and coaching has always been a huge passion for us both throughout our lives. Tennis coaching brings so many positives, helping individuals to for fill their potential and develop as people is a privilege.

Our years began to take a familiar path.... working 40 hours a week during un-sociable hours in a physically demanding job for the school term and then having a month off and going on an epic adventure.

One of our epic adventures was trekking in Patagonia in 2017. I remember there was a point during that trip where myself and Bec just thought that this kind of lifestyle just wasn’t sustainable. A change was needed….as after all we were not getting any younger.

We sat in a lovely coffee shop in Cardiff and planned our future…what would we do that would mean we could start to have more time enjoying the things we loved to do.

We decided that we would start investing in property and our strategy would be Buy To Let. After a couple of frustrating months we acquired our first property, did a cosmetic refurbishment….mostly ourselves and got tenants in. Quickly the second followed in much the same fashion.

Then we hit a stumbling block….no more money!!!! So we went on search of a strategy that could help with cashflow. On a relative whim we attended a property day early in 2019 that introduced Serviced Accommodation to us.

We were very excited that this was a strategy that we could make work. So Switchback Stays was born.

We are lucky that we can both still be involved in our passion of tennis while moving forward with our new passion….Switchback Stays.

2020 has thrown its challenges at us but we have worked hard to use the time wisely and grow our business. We are both looking forward to what the future brings and the world opening back up.

How we are surviving lockdown here at Switchback Stays….

Almost a year on since the initial lock down in March 2020 all of us are and will be experiencing some form of lockdown/restrictions for a few more months to come.

It hasn’t been an easy time for anyone and here at Switchback Stays it has been no exception. Keeping a positive mindset and continuing to be proactive at times has been difficult.

Here are some ways that we have coped with the stresses of lockdown…….

1. Being kind to ourselves -taking the pressure off to be continually productive and make sure there is a fun part of each day.

2. Enjoying time with each other -when will we have this much time together again……lets enjoy it!!

3. Bonding and spending time with our gorgeous pup -dogs have a great was of reminding us daily to live in the moment…not to mention getting us out of the house.

4. Exploring the local area and walks from home -with travel limited its great to explore the delights of your local area on foot.

5. Organising themed nights in -film night with popcorn, pizza making eve or curry night can be a great way to have something to look forward to.

6. Getting into a good Netflix series -great way to switch off from the situation and get into your fav programmes!

7. DIY around the house -getting those things done that you have just been meaning to do for ages…..makes you feel good!

8. Embracing zoom & face time -catching up with fabulous family and friends is the best!

Bute Park

This grade 1 listed park is the main park in the centre of Cardiff. A spacious 130acres of landscaped gardens and parkland that once formed the grounds of Cardiff Castle. Take a beautiful walk along the River Taff and enjoy a fantastic coffee or lunch from one of the cafes throughout the park.

Cefn Onn Park

This grade 2 listed country park was created in the valley of the Nant Fawr stream. It has a magnificent collection of native and exotic trees. Its lovely to walk around the valley and also gives access to Caerfilly Mountain trails.

Roath Park Gardens

This is a truly beautiful park, maintaining a classic Victorian atmosphere throughout its facilities and architecture. It has been awarded the Green Fall Award for high quality and importance. Enjoy the many birds, gardens, take a boat on the lake and grab an ice cream in this lovely park.

Victoria Park

We're Good to Go

We’re really pleased to have been awarded the industry standard Good to Go mark in recognition of the practical steps we’ve taken to follow COVID-19 government guidelines and industry advice.

It’s really exciting to be able to welcome guests back to Cardiff and to be playing our part in the city slowly opening back up. The efforts local business have gone to in making sure they’re doing their bit is reassuring to see.

Staying with us is the perfect choice for visitors to Cardiff looking for somewhere to stay where they can have the place to themselves. They’ll be able to make use of the fully equipped kitchen, jump on the high-speed wifi, relax in the living space and get a good sleep.

These are unprecedented times and businesses are having to tackle challenges in new and innovative ways. We've introduced a new system to make sure all our bookings have their own, personal bookings manager. This manager is on-hand right from the initial enquiry through to check-out......and all the bits in-between.

Protecting our guests and our staff

Switchback Stays serviced apartments are always thoroughly cleaned to the highest possible standards. Our cleaning teams pride themselves on hearing guest reviews that mention ‘sparkling’ or ‘spotless’!

During the corona virus pandemic we've been taking advice from platforms we trust on the topic of keeping our places to stay safe for our guests and staff.

The long list of tasks our cleaning teams tick-off to make sure each property is ready for a new guest is already very thorough. It’s been reassuring to hear that lots of what we already do is good practice, even in these challenging times. Such as -

- having our linen professionally cleaned at the highest heat settings recommended by the manufacturer

- our expert cleaning teams always wearing disposable gloves and using disposable cleaning cloths.

- providing anti-bacterial handwash in all our dispensers

We’ve decided to add-in some additional steps, to provide a safe environment as possible -

- After thorough cleaning to disinfect all surfaces including door handles, light switches and soft furnishing.

- Extend the time between guests and ventilate rooms

- Provide extra towels and hand towels for each guest

We’re always keen to review and adjust the systems and processes we use during the day-to-day running of Switchback Stays. Looking closely at how we prepare our apartments between guests has been a useful exercise and we’ll be continuing some of these enhanced cleaning practices in the future.

Switchback STAY HOME

We’ve been making sure we follow the #stayhome advice and do our bit to #protecttheNHS. It’s been incredible to see communities pull together in the challenging and unprecedented times.

We’ve been busy this week preparing our accommodation so we can cater for key-workers and those in vulnerable groups who need to self-isolate. We’re really pleased to be able to offer safe (and stylish) spaces with all the home comforts for our guests during these difficult times.

We do still have some availability. If you or someone you know needs short-term accommodation in Cardiff and they are a key-worker or need to self-isolate (perhaps they are living with a key worker and are in a vulnerable group) get in touch.

As a new company and a fledgling brand this has been an opportunity for us to challenge and step-up to our brand standards. More about those in a coming blog post.

The apartment has a fully equipped kitchen with oven, stove, dishwasher, Lavazza coffee machine and on site washing machine. There is a functional living space with dining table and free on street parking included.
